City-Level Proxy Targeting: What It Actually Means (And When You Need It vs. Country-Level)
Geo-targeting for residential proxies comes in layers: country, region/state, and city. Most providers cover country-level cleanly. Fewer cover city-level with any real precision, because it requires a much denser, better-mapped IP pool — you need enough residential IPs actually located in a given city to make the targeting meaningful, not just a rough approximation based on the nearest available IP.

A few checks that separate the real thing from the marketing claim:
- 1Ask (or check the docs) whether city selection is a dropdown of specific, named cities with real IP density behind each one, or a free-text field that silently falls back to nearest-match
- 2Check whether the same city selection is reflected consistently across sessions — inconsistent results on repeated requests to the same city is a sign the targeting is approximate
- 3Look at how many cities are actually listed per country — a handful of major cities per country suggests real density; hundreds of tiny towns listed for every country is often a sign the list was generated from a geography database, not from actual IP coverage
